As the calendar turns to the end of May, the air across the country begins to feel like summer. We see the grills coming out, the pool openings scheduled, and the anticipation of a long weekend. But here at My Real Estate Transaction (MRET), before we dive into the festivities of the season, we want to pause.

Memorial Day is more than a milestone on the calendar or the "unofficial start of summer." It is a day of profound weight and sacred remembrance. It is the day we collectively stop to honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

At MRET, our daily work revolves around homes: helping agents manage the paperwork so families can move into new chapters and new front doors. But today, we are thinking about the families whose front doors will never again open for a loved one returning from service. We are thinking about the "some who gave all."

In the spirit of being your trusted teammate, we’ve put together this tribute. This isn't about transactions or compliance; it’s about gratitude, community, and the shared history that binds us together in this beautiful region we call home.

The Heart of the Holiday: Why We Remember

It is easy for the true meaning of Memorial Day to get lost in the shuffle of three-day weekend sales and travel plans. But when we look closer at its origins: originally known as "Decoration Day" after the Civil War, we see a tradition born out of a deep, communal need to acknowledge sacrifice. It began with people simply placing flowers on the graves of fallen soldiers, a quiet act of saying, "You are not forgotten."

There is a distinct difference between Veterans Day and Memorial Day that we often like to clarify. While Veterans Day in November honors everyone who has served in the military, Memorial Day is specifically for those who died while in uniform. It is a day for the fallen.

When we think about the freedom we have to build businesses and to enjoy the safety of our neighborhoods, we realize these are not just "rights": they are gifts secured by the courage of others.

A Moment of Silence Across Our Region

Our service areas: Virginia, Maryland, DC, North Carolina, Florida, and Pennsylvania, are steeped in military history. From the hallowed grounds of Arlington to the rolling hills of Gettysburg, the echoes of service are everywhere.

Washington, DC and Northern Virginia

For those of us living and working near the capital, Memorial Day hits close to home. Arlington National Cemetery stands as a sprawling testament to sacrifice. Walking through Section 60, where many of our most recent heroes rest, is a humbling experience that reminds us of the modern cost of our security.

In DC, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial (The Wall) and the World War II Memorial provide spaces for quiet reflection. If you find yourself in the city this weekend, we encourage you to find a name on the wall. Touch the etched stone. It transforms a statistic into a person: someone who had a home, a family, and a story.

Maryland and the Naval Academy

Maryland’s military ties are deep, especially in Annapolis. The U.S. Naval Academy honors midshipmen and officers who served with distinction and gave their lives at sea and on land. The Maryland World War II Memorial, overlooking the Severn River, is another beautiful, serene spot to offer a silent "thank you."

North Carolina and Pennsylvania

In North Carolina, the Airborne & Special Operations Museum in Fayetteville tells the stories of those who jumped into the unknown for the sake of others. In Pennsylvania, a visit to Gettysburg National Cemetery connects us to the very roots of this holiday, where President Lincoln once spoke of the "last full measure of devotion."

How to Honor the Fallen This Weekend

Gratitude is most powerful when it’s active. If you’re looking for ways to make this Memorial Day more meaningful for yourself or your family, here are a few suggestions that align with the spirit of the day:

  • The National Moment of Remembrance: At 3:00 p.m. local time on Monday, join the rest of the country in a one-minute pause for silence. It’s a simple but powerful way to unite in gratitude.

  • Flag Etiquette: If you fly the U.S. flag at your home or office, remember that on Memorial Day, it should be flown at half-staff until noon, and then raised to the top of the staff for the remainder of the day.

  • Say Their Names: If you know a Gold Star family: those who have lost a family member in military service: reach out. You don't need a perfect script. A simple, "I'm thinking of [Name] today," lets them know their loved one’s sacrifice is still recognized.

  • Support the Living: Many organizations, like the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS), provide support to the families of the fallen. A donation or a moment of volunteer time can be a way to honor the dead by helping those they left behind.

A Sincere Thank You

To the families in our community who have experienced this loss firsthand: we see you, and we honor you. Your resilience is an inspiration to all of us.

To the service members who are currently serving in our region and beyond: thank you for your commitment.

And to the fallen: we promise to keep your stories alive. We will continue to build our communities and serve our neighbors with the integrity and dedication that honor the legacy you left behind.

From Nicole Kim and the entire team at My Real Estate Transaction, we wish you a peaceful and reflective Memorial Day weekend. May we all find a moment to be still, to be grateful, and to remember.
